This week’s Overwatch League matches could make or break some teams as the final week of the stage looms. This week will see some very important matchups and could very well eliminate some from playoff contention. Let’s take a look.
You won’t find a team any more in control of their own destiny that the Boston Uprising–a perfect 6-0 in Stage 3. If they finish in first, the new playoff rules implemented by Blizzard says that they will be allowed to pick their semifinals opponent (crazy). On paper this should be an easy week for Boston as they face two teams with bad records in Shanghai and Dallas who are a combined 1-11. this week. If they sweep they’ll need just one win against either the Los Angeles Valiant or Los Angeles Gladiators to assure a playoff spot.
Here’s where it gets little more interesting.
The Valiant, New York Excelsior and San Francisco Shock are currently sitting in the two, three, and four spots this week and need wins to stay afloat in the playoff race.
Excitingly, the Shock will square off with the Excelsior on Thursday in the 9:00pm EST match which could have huge implications as to who makes the playoffs. The Shock at 4-2 really need this win to fight off four teams right behind them sitting at 3-3 and ready to pounce. To make matters worse, the Shock will take on a hit or miss Spitfire during the first match on Saturday.
Not surprisingly with the way the stage formats are set up, five teams still have a chance to make it to the stage playoffs, but will need to win out and get some help from others. The Gladiators, Seoul Dynasty, Houston Outlaws and Philadelphia Fusion are 3-3 with London at the end of the telescope at 2-4. The Gladiators have the best map differential of the teams in playoff contention. Each of these teams play at least one match against a team currently looking for a playoff spot.
